Proper Treatment of Major Depressive Disorder Before It Ruins Lives

We all feel sad at certain points in our lives. But when one feels hopeless and desperate constantly, it could be the sign of a more serious health condition. Major depressive disorder or MDD is the clinical term for depression, which is characterized by many symptoms. The good news is that this condition is curable with the help of drugs called antidepressants. If you feel sad most of the time and that feeling prevents you from living your life fully, then consider seeking medical help. A doctor could probably prescribe antidepressants to control your emotions and prevent you from potentially committing suicide.

Signs You Are Suffering from MDD

Depressive_DisorderAccording to experts, it is normal for a person to feel sad, lonely, desperate and hopeless at certain times. But it is abnormal for a person to feel gloomy and miserable for two to three weeks straight. People who are depressed for almost the entire day, especially in the morning, and have no interest at all in pursuing normal activities are suffering from depression.  Other symptoms of the disorder include fatigue or lack of energy almost every day. People who have MDD also harbor feelings of worthlessness and guilt almost every day. They are usually indecisive, lack focus and have lost a lot of weight (usually more than 5%) in a month. People with depression also don’t see any point in pursuing everyday activities. Finally, those who are suffering from this condition also have recurring thoughts of committing suicide.

Higher Incidence of MDD in Women

Interestingly, women have been shown by studies to be more likely to suffer from depression than men. Hormonal changes during menstruation and pregnancy can increase risk of MDD among women, as well as miscarriage and menopause. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about 2 to 2.5 in 10 adults are likely to suffer from depression at some point in their lives.
This condition can also be due to factors like increased stress at work or at home, struggles in balancing family life with career and having to look after an aging parent. Single parents are also prone to having this disorder.

Treatment of MDD

Antidepressants like cymbalta are commonly prescribed to individuals who are suffering from MDD. Cymbalta is a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor that is generally given to people who have depression as well as generalized anxiety disorder. This versatile drug is also prescribed for chronic joint or muscle pain.

Wellbutrin is another antidepressant that is often prescribed to patients with MDD. This is an antidepressant that is also given to people who have seasonal affective disorder.  It works in the brain to treat depression. It is not advised for people with seizures, eating disorders, or those who have suddenly quit drinking alcoholic drinks.

Abilify is not an antidepressant but it can also work well with other antidepressants to combat the effects of the disorder. It is actually an antipsychotic drug that changes the chemical action in the brain and helps the antidepressants work more effectively.  It is also prescribed for people with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
