Clonazepam is the generic name of Klonopin. Drugs under this generic name are prescribed in treating epileptic seizures particularly those that are associated with the severe form of epilepsy called Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. It is also used in treating Akinetic seizures, Myoclonic seizures, and absence seizures. Aside from seizures, Clonazepam is also prescribed for treatment of panic disorder. It is manufactured by Hoffmann-La Roche, Inc.
Short-Term Side Effects
While the use of Clonazepam is generally considered safe, there is still a risk that it can cause side effects. However, the short-term side effects of this drug are minor. Most people who have experienced these side effects were able to tolerate them well.
Drowsiness is the most common side effect of the drug. Other short-term side effects of the medication are dizziness, upper respiratory tract infections particularly the common cold, as well as coordination and behavior problems. There are also cases wherein the patient will suffer from slurred speech, confusion, lower sex drive, and incessant coughing. There are also reports that Clonazepam will cause unexplained fatigue, sore throat, and menstrual cramps.
Long-Term Side Effects
The chronic use of Clonazepam may lead to serious and long-term side effects although the chances of a patient getting these symptoms are low. Immediate medical attention is required in case any of these side effects become noticeable. These side effects include migraine, weight loss, chronic swelling of the ankle, persistent toothaches, and hemorrhoids. Other side effects of the drug are vertigo, ear infections, motion sickness, gout, and back pain.
Individuals who have been using this drug for years may also expose themselves to risk of getting bald, having acne, or losing their sense of taste. Other serious side effects include muscle cramps, nosebleeds, difficulty in urinating, and vision problems.
Psychological problems may also crop up as a result of long-term Clonazepam use. Patients may entertain suicidal thoughts or suffer from depression. They may also experience chronic bouts of agitation, hostility, and hallucinations.
